Brain Development
- The brain of a fetus starts developing around three weeks after conception.
- The brain first develops in reflexes and movement, and then slowly starts developing with memory and thought.
- The neural tube forms first, on the entire length of the developing embryo. Around Day 27, the neural tube has closed and starts to form into the brain and spinal cord.
- A fetus' new developing brain can, astonishingly, make a quarter of a million new neurons and making links between them in less than a minute.
- Around Month 3 the brain stem, located just aboved the spinal cord starts developing.
- During Months 3, 4, and 5, the fetus has a strong heartbeat, and it has begun breathing, swallowing, and sucking.
- At the end of Month 5, the brain is almost fully mature. The developing cub can hear his mother's heartbeat and may be startled by loud noises.
- The cerebral cortex of the brain develops the slowest. This controls the cub's senses, like the ability to hear, feel, touch, see, and smell.
- The brain stem and spinal column grow steadily throughout the final two months of pregnancy and are well-developed at birth.
- The environmental, physical, and emotional being of the mother all have an effect on the fetus' brain development.
