An existing breeding selection program is the Washington State University Bear Center. It is the only facility to house bears for research and keep them safe. For safe breeding of an endangered or threatened animal (such as the grizzly bear), a housing facility is needed as well as outdoor and indoor dens for the bears to exercise, a kitchen for the bears to eat in, and a medical area in case something goes wrong in labor or at any other time. Also, the law requires breeding programs to use materials that are safe for animals and it requires that the animal be kept in a state of good health. Breeders should be aware of the animal's health and should only breed animals when they are healthy.
